Shigeo Hoshikawa was born in Shinjo, Yamagata, Japan and came to the USA to study English after graduating from Wako University, Tokyo, Japan. While he was studying at Wright Junior College, Chicago, Illinois, one of his friends asked if he could make Origami because he wanted to give something as a unique birthday gift to his girl friend. Shigeo knew how origami looked, but did not know how to fold a piece of paper to make a bird or an animal. He bought a simple origami book at the Japanese store in Chicago and started practicing how to fold a piece of paper into different figures of flowers, animals and other unique designs. Shigeo started teaching Origami at Heiwa Terrace and JASC in Chicago, Illinois. He started exhibiting Origami art at the Ginza festival and other locations in Chicago. In 1983, Shigeo was asked to teach Origami to one of the actors for the movie "Sixteen Candles," directed by John Hughes. After returning to Japan, he joined the Origami society in Tokyo and became active introducing Origami not only in Japan and but also in other countries. Shigeo demonstrates his Origami art work at the "Ikimono Bunkashi Gakkai (The Society of Biosophia Studies)" during their annual meeting in Japan.
